5 Best Wood Burning Kits on a Budget

Wood burning is a fun and artistic way to make signs, designs, and illustrations of all kinds, using wood. This is a skill that allows your creativity to flourish and your imagination to run wild. This list covers the 5 best wood burning kits on a budget. All of these options have a beginner something to offer. Check it out!

There are lots of wood burning kits out there, sometimes differing in what features they have and what they can do. It can be difficult to decide on the best one, so we have created this list of the 5 best wood burning kits on a budget. Let’s get right into it and look at what the best kits are.

1. TRUArt Stage One Kit – Dual Brass Tip Wands

truart-stage-one

This is my favorite brass tip wood burning kit. It comes with two wands and loads of tips. Plus you get a sturdy aluminum case to keep everything in place.

One of the biggest drawbacks to a brass tip wood burning kit is that it takes so long to change tips because you have to wait for it to heat and cool. It can take up to 10 – 15 minutes for tip exchange. This kit eliminates that problem with two wands. You can preload two tips for a project and use one wand while the other heats and cools if you need to change to a different tip.

There are two heat settings making this a great burner for any type of medium. Whether you’re burning on leather, canvas, paper or wood, there are heat settings to accommodate your needs. The lower setting, 15W, is great for leather, paper, canvas or any softer medium. The higher setting, 30W, works great on wood. You may even want to switch to the 15W on softer woods like basswood, or if you’re shading and need lighter shades of burn.

The kit includes:

  • 2 Burner Wands(pens)
  • 35 Tips (pyro tips, stamps, solder)
  • 1 Aluminum Case
  • 2 Metal Stands
  • 2 Heat Settings
  • 1 Metal Stencil
  • 1 Instruction Manual with Templates

I posted a FULL VIDEO REVIEW on YouTube. Check out what this kit has to offer up close.

2. Chandler Tool Wood Burning Kit

The Chandler tool is a great introductory tool for wood burning. It’s built to last with a precision heating element, steel shaft and solid brass tips.

This is the wood burner I used in my pyrography book for beginners! I chose this burner so it would be accessible to everyone and anyone that wanted to get started in wood burning. It’s affordable and simple to use. I knew that pyrography newbies would need and user friendly tool to get started. The chandler tool is perfect and deserves a spot on the 5 best wood burning kits on a budget.

  • High heat (600℃/1112°F) for smooth burning
  • 8 Solid Brass Tips
  • Soldering Tip
  • Hot Knife and adapter
  • Ergonomic handle for prolonged use
  • Insulated body for comfort
  • American brand & lifetime warranty

3. Walnut Hollow Creative Versa Tool

Whether you are a beginner or professional, this wood burning kit is a great budget-friendly option. It comes with a variety of tips, allowing you to get really fine and precise with your illustrations and words. This particular pack has a variety of tips with 11 from which to choose. It also has a soldering tip with soldering wire in the pack. For this blog review, I put together a simple piece of artwork on a repurposed canvas. I’m going to be using several of the tips throughout the burn to show you what it can do.

Each tip has threaded base that you screw into the burner wand.

As with the previous wood burning kit, you can use it for soldering as well. However, you can also use it for stamping.

This is a perfect tool for crafters who are interested in experimenting with a variety of mediums. It comes with a temperature control dial allowing the user the flexibility needed to get the perfect amount of heat for any project. Other features for this wood burning tool are its color coded heat zones located on the dial and lead free solder.

This tool takes a few minutes to heat up, but once it does, it works really well. The tips are durable and will last a long time if you take care of them.

  • Inexpensive
  • Variety of Tips
  • Easy to find
  • Easy to use
  • Great for beginners

4. TRUArt Stage One – Single Pen Brass Tip Kit

truart-wood-burning-kit

If you were intrigued by the TRUArt Brass Tip at the beginning of this list, but still need to save pennies, this is a good alternative. It’s the same manufacturer and quality, it just comes with fewer items in the kit to help save you money.

The TRUArt kit with two wands is $59.95 (as of today), but you can have this kit for $37.95. It’s a great way to save a few extra bucks and still get a great quality burner.

This is perfect for beginners or as a gift. You can start with this kit and add on another wand and extra tips later. TRUArt offers a la carte options for the burners and the tips.

The kit includes:

  • 1 Burner Wand
  • 321 Tips (pyro tips, stamps, solder)
  • 1 Plastic Case
  • 1 Metal Stand
  • 2 Heat Settings
  • 1 Metal Stencil
  • 1 Instruction Manual with Templates

5. Walnut Hollow 41992 Creative Woodburner Wire Tip Tool

The price point is fantastic for people that want to upgrade from a craft burner, but still aren’t ready to invest in a $200 – 300 wood burning tool.  It gives people a pro burner option without breaking the bank.  It doesn’t have as many features as a $200 – 300 wood burner of course, but it has some great features at a $58 burner.

The heat setting dial goes from 1 – 10. It comes with one wand and a clip stand. The stand is compactly hidden on the bottom and you pop it off and place it in the slot on the side. Then it holds your wand in place and gives you a spot to hold it when it’s hot. It offers so much at a great spot and is my favorite option on the 5 best wood burning kits on a budget list.
