THE 5 BEST PROFESSIONAL WOOD BURNING KITS OF 2021
If you are looking to buy a wood burning tool and have no idea where to begin, this article gives you the five best professional wood burning kits.
I have used all these kits. I researched and gathered the info on these kits based on the quality of the tool.
There are so many overseas manufacturers out there passing off cheap wood burning kits as high quality and ripping people off. It was important to me to find the best professional wood burning kits for people looking to invest. These are expensive kits and people want to know they are getting good quality machines.
Retail reviews can be deceiving since people are getting paid to give 5 star reviews. So I put this list together because these are real manufacturers putting together quality machines. You work hard for your money and when you invest this much money in one piece of equipment, it needs to live up to your expectations.
These aren’t in any particular order of greatness, they are just listed as I thought of them. Each one of these machines has something great to offer. There’s not one that’s necessarily better than the other. Your choice is going to come down to what features coincide with what’s the most important to you as a burner.
Colwood Super Pro II
The Colwood Super Pro II has a special place in my heart. This is one of the best professional wood burning kits on the market. And it’s the first one I ever purchased. I bought it in 2016 and I still use it today in 2020. It’s so easy to use. It gets hot fast, the tip variety is plentiful and easy to switch out, and it has two pens.
The Super Pro is Colwood’s most versatile unit and features a wider heat range and is more powerful than the Detailer and Cub models. The Super Pro has two handpiece cords, 14 awg and 16 awg. Only one cord will get hot at a time; there is a front panel switch to choose which cord is operational.
This kit has the replaceable tips. I love this option because it is so easy to switch the tips even when they are still hot. I just use the tip puller to pull out the tips and then put in a new one. Using the tip puller means I don’t have to ever touch a hot tip.
You can’t go wrong with this kit!!
The Kit Includes:
- Three Tips
- Two Wands
- Tip Puller
- Two Tip Polishers
- Pyrography Workbook
- Front panel switch allows carver to have two different tip styles set up and ready to use
- Two handpiece clips for mounting handpieces
- One Ultra-Flex handpiece cord (18 gauge)
- One Heavy Duty handpiece cord (16 gauge)
- Excellent choice for gourd burning
- Also available in a 220 Volt model for international use
Colwood also makes a Detailer that has the same high quality, it just has one pen and costs a little less for $150.
TRUArt Stage 2 Dual Pen
I’ve been using this pen for a couple of months now. I have been really impressed with it. My favorite thing about it was the fact that I didn’t need to use finger guards with it. The pen tip is so guarded and my fingers didn’t feel any of the heat.
The stand also made it really easy to store and put down the pens while I was burning. It’s a small detail, but one that I was really appreciative of while I was in the middle of burning.
TRUArt has a wood burning kit that is especially designed for working with wood and leather. With this pyrography pen, you get a number of different heads, allowing you to vary in how you create letters and designs. There is a stainless steel barrel that has a heat-resistant handle, which makes it easier to handle it in a more precise way.
You get instructions that are easy to follow, if you have never used a wood burning kit before, as well as tips to help you get really creative with your woodworking designs. This is a great budget-friendly kit that is versatile, being able to be used beyond just woodworking.
The screw in bits on the tip made me a little nervous. I was concerned that it would make changing the tips challenging, but because I had two pens, it was no trouble. The tips were easier to load than I thought they would be, and I could have two tips loaded in the pens ready to go.
The features this burner has to offer at the price is a definite must see. Even though I have loved my Colwood, this is the burner I now use the majority of the time. It’s my go to choice.
The Kit Includes:
- Consistent Heat – 60W Wood Burner
- Ergonomic
- Switch between two tips easily
- Cools and Heats Quickly
- Thick Durable wire tips – 20GA
- 20 Tips included in kit (9 different tips – some are duplicates)
- Extras: Case, stand, tip cleaners, pliers, tweezers, templates

Razertip Dual Burner Wood Burning Kit
Razertip is one of the premiere wood burning product manufacturers and one of the best professional wood burning kits. It is regarded as a powerful and versatile tool, capable of expanding a pyrographer’s range.
I have never used this particular model, but I have used Razertip’s P80. I can personally attest to the high quality of these machines. I chose this particular model because the price point is more universal. Also, the other kits on this list have two pens, so I wanted to include Razertip’s equivalent to that.
The SS-D10 is Razertip’s workhorse, with many features not found on any other burner. Dual handpiece capability allows you to have 2 pens plugged in at the same time and change between them at the flick of a switch. This is particularly useful if your work calls for frequent handpiece or cord changes. It saves time and wear on the connectors.
Get more tips and Razertip Pyro accessories on their site: https://www.razertip.com/
The Kit Includes:
- The SS-D10 Burner
- 1 Heavy Duty Cord
- 1 Standard Cord
- 1 Fixed Pen
- 10 amp output: fastest tip-heat recovery in the industry
- Temperature control: won’t scorch wood at “1” through to “red-hot” at 10
Burnmaster Eagle Pro
The Burnmaster!! Hands down one of the hottest wood burners I’ve used! It gets hot at a level that I personally don’t even need. I tend to burn on softer woods, but if you’re burning on hard woods or gourds, this is a great burner for extreme heats.
This uncompromising set has everything you need for maximum convenience & pro-quality wood burning. It comes with an output of 130 watts and is controlled by variable electricity supply. With its metallic housing, the internals are well protected, minimizing damages. This tool’s copper contact tips make it a good electrical conductor leading to increased efficiency. It comes with an overload protector and a three-year warranty, making it an ideal tool for a pyrographer who is looking for an effective and long-lasting professional wood burning kit.
It’s claim to fame is that it will accept other wood burning tips. I was super impressed by this feature. If you see a tip made by Detail Master, Colwood or Razertip that you want to try, you can still use it in this wood burning kit. It’s made in the USA and has a 3 year warranty.
The eagle pro kit is extremely well made and of high quality materials. The gold and copper tip contacts create a superior electrical conductivity. If this is the burner you chose, you won’t be disappointed.
The Kit Includes:
- 2 Wood Burning pens with cords
- 15 Tips
- Carrying Bag
- Eagle Pro Wood Burner
- Pen Adapters to accept other burners wands
- 3 Year warranty on the power supply; 1 year on pens
Optima Dual Port Wood Burning Kit
The Optima Dual Port is a burner I have not tried yet, but I have had several other burners recommend it to me. It is a perfect tool for crafters who are interested in experimenting with a variety of mediums.
Optima 1 DUAL Port Kit gives precision temperature control, with a very wide range of heat. It is especially good at holding steady temperatures at the cooler settings which is great for detail work or shading. Easily reset the burn low-end adjustment. Dual port allows you to quickly toggle back and forth between pen/tip combo which will make your burning sessions quicker and easier. Includes two HEAVY DUTY pen cords 16 gauge, so comfortable you’ll hardly even know it is there!
Even though I don’t have any personal experience with this pen, I wanted to include it because so many others have recommended it to me. I think it’s worth mentioning in this list of the best professional wood burning kits. If you’re new to wood burning and are in the market for a professional wood burning kit, you need as much info as you can get.
It also has a great price tag at $155. It’s the lowest priced kit on this list, but I don’t think quality is sacrificed. It doesn’t have as many features as the other burners, but it’s priced accordingly and a great option if you’re looking to save a few bucks.
The Kit includes:
- The Dual Port Burner with 16GA pen cords
- Rounded Skew Pen
- Spear Shader Pen
I couldn’t find this burner on it’s own website or on Amazon. I could only find it on third party distributor sites. Below is a link of the first website that came up when I google searched it.
Thanks for reading this list of the best professional wood burning kits. If you have any more kits you think I should add, let me know in the comments!!

Just read your review and found it very informative. I am curious though why the Detail Master wasn’t part of your review. I have been using the Detail Master for 5+ years and until now have been very satisfied. I am in search of a really high quality burner that has a tip which easily allows me to create dark smooth shaded backgrounds. When I came across your review I was surprised that you hadn’t included Detail Master. I’ve used the spoon shader tip with my Detail Master and also purchased a Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool after reading one of Minisa Robinson’s Woodburning books. Neither of these systems has given me the ability to do a shaded background with the look I am seeking. Now I’m considering the Razortip after reading your review. Maybe you’ve covered a similar question by another in your newsletter? I will check it out.

Hey Sylvia! I’ve never used the Detail Master before. I have heard a couple of people mention the Detail Master along with the Optima brand of burners. I’m hesitant to write about burners I haven’t used. They are both on my list to try and I’ll certainly update the blog if I like them. It will just take time for me to get them and use them for a while so I can put my thoughts together. Thanks for commenting and letting me know your thoughts! 🙂 What type of shaded technique are you looking to achieve?
Shirley Malar
PJL Enterprises is the manufacturer of Optima 1 Pyrography equipment. The owner is Pat Lamusga. His website is: http://www.carvertools.com/ and phone # is 1-320-594-2811.
I hope you will add some more detailed information about Optima 1 equipment to your list for 2021. It is certainly well deserved.
Aney Carver
Thanks for the info! I will definitely reach out to him. I’ve wanted to try one forever! My plan is to put together a LIVE webinar where I talk about all the burners at one time and answer questions. I’ve been putting it off until I had the chance to try the Optima.
Shirley Malar
Please let me know when you get your webinar going up and running! Shirley

I have an Optima I bought in early 2000’s. Just bought a new one and gave the old one to my granddaughter, still works great!
Aney Carver
That’s great to hear. I’ve got my eye on one, I need to go ahead and get one. 🙂

My Razertip recently broke down, but has been a helper for me for a long time. But I think I picked a good replacement thanks to your article)

I have used the optima one dual Port burner for 4 years… I’ve never had any problems with it… it is the best machine I have used.. I’ve used colwood, razor tip, and the basic Walnut hollow and the optima in my opinion is far superior… I’ve been doing pyrography since 2002… I highly recommend the optima one, you won’t be sorry and with the lifetime guarantee how can you go wrong… You deal with the owner of the company personally he makes them himself, they are not massed produced and he’s very helpful and friendly.

I have used my Detail Master almost daily since the mid 1980s. I have tried others including almost every one mentioned. I use a burner pen for hours at a time and every new model gets so hot you can’t hold it. I would love to find the old style large skew fixed pen for my Detail Master. My unit is still perfect but can’t stand the new lightweight pens. If anyone has an old detail master with fixed pens I would love to buy it. I only want the fixed pens but will buy whole unit to get them. I have won National and World championships but now I’m in desperate need of a wood burner large skew that won’t melt my hands
Aney Carver
I’m sorry to hear that you can’t find what you’re looking for. I’ve wanted to test out the Detail Master myself, but it’s really hard to find one that I feel comfortable buying. Most of the ones I see are kits with the unit on ebay (used) and they still cost a lot.
Hopefully someone here can direct you to a way to purchase the pens. You may also want to try a Pyrography Facebook Group. There are a lot of people in those groups and there may be someone that can help.
